16 August 2007 ABI warns 'bags can be lost in two minutes'
While some holidaymakers may be tempted to avoid the expense of travel insurance when taking a short break, they have been advised to purchase comprehensive cover, as belongings can go missing in a short space of time when abroad.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) notes that, in addition to flight cancellation and delays resulting for a myriad of causes - from industrial action to inclement weather - good travel insurance policies will also provide cover for lost or stolen baggage.
Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the association, said: "If your baggage goes missing, you will normally be covered under your travel insurance.
"It doesn't take more than a couple of minutes for you to lose your bags."
He noted that some less-comprehensive travel insurance policies will specify acceptable reasons for cancellation which is covered, such as illness of the person travelling or a family member.
InsureandGo recently revealed that it had seen 2,094 claims for missing luggage from January to June 2007, an increase of 85 per cent on the figures for 2006.
