18 July 2007 ACI reports 4.4 billion annual passengers
Airports Council International (ACI) has published its annual statistics for 2006, reporting that 4.4 billion passengers took to the air over the 12-month period.
This figure represents a 4.8 per cent rise on last year's figures, with the World Air Traffic Report also relaying airport-by-airport and country-by-country statistics.
International passenger traffic increased by 6.8 per cent, with tourism driving travel to Africa and Morocco seeing a boost as a result of its open skies agreement with the EU.
Robert J Aaronson, director of the ACI, said: "The statistics tell a great story - growth and stability.
"Three-quarters of airports worldwide reported positive passenger growth."
He added that passenger flights reflect broader trends of economic growth, with airports looking to play a vital part in enhancing local and regional economies.
The ACI was founded in 1991 as an international association aiming to represent the interests of airport operators and improve partnership working efforts between bodies in the industry.
