04 April 2007 AUC calls for lost luggage league tables
Many airlines are causing inconvenience to holidaymakers due to the ongoing problem of lost luggage, the UK's Air Transport Users' Council (AUC) has claimed.
Following a recent poll, the AUC has called for a lost luggage league table to be established to compare the performance of airlines.
According to its Mishandled Baggage Report, 5.6 million pieces of luggage were lost over 2006 during flights operated by European airlines.
British Airways topped the unofficial league, with 23 bags for every 1,000 passengers it carried in 2006, being misplaced.
While 85 per cent of those were returned to their owners within 48 hours, the airline admitted that some luggage items were never located and returned.
"When passengers hand over their suitcases at check-in, they should be able to expect to see them at the other end," said Tina Tietjen, AUC chairman.
At the start of this year, the AUC published its annual charter airline delay league table that reported slight improvements in punctuality.
