10 May 2007 Abta backs 'end of the 1p flight'
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has expressed its support for the decision by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to take action against travel companies and airlines who advertise headline prices without including non-optional charges.
Following a decision three months ago, the OFT will from this week act against firms who do not include the non-optional costs of airport charges, taxes and fuel supplements in a fare's headline price.
Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta, said: "The days of the 1p flight have now gone, but in reality they were never here."
He added that the association welcomed this decision by the OFT and anticipates the office taking necessary measures against companies flouting this directive.
In February 2007, the OFT reported that misleading holiday pricing can make it difficult for travellers to properly compare the varying prices from different firms, thus distorting the choice of the consumer and damaging confidence in the travel industry.
