06 March 2007 Abta backs report on holiday protection
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has backed a report by consumer organisation Which? investigating the state of statutory protection for do-it-yourself holidays.
Noting that package holidays are financially protected by law, the association calls for all pre-arranged holidays to be covered in this manner.
In conjunction with the Civil Aviation Authority, Abta lobbied the government last year for the introduction of a levy to fund a "safety net" scheme for all travel arrangements to protect holidaymakers whose travel provider experiences financial collapse.
Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta, said: "Laws have not kept up with the changes in consumer demand and developments in the travel industry."
He urged the rewriting of the European Package Travel Directive to encompass a wider range of holidays, stating that the accord is protecting an ever-decreasing number of travellers.
In August 2005, Post Office urged holidaymakers to book package trips with a company approved by Abta or the Air Travel Organisers' Licensing protection scheme.
