11 July 2007 Abta launches Family Safe Holidays
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has announced the launch of a new programme that includes measures to help British families remain safe when travelling abroad.
Dubbed Family Safe Holidays, the scheme provides travellers with an online account which can store important information which may be needed in an emergency overseas.
Holidaymakers can include details of their medical conditions and allergies, passports numbers, travel insurance policy information and credit card cancellation phone numbers in the online "deposit box", together with other essential data.
This information can be quickly given to families abroad following receipt of their unique ID and password.
Keith Richards, head of business development and consumer affairs at Abta, said: "I am delighted that we can endorse this service.
"It provides practical solutions to the most common problems families face on holiday, but importantly, it also offers critical and timely help when the most serious of all incidents happen."
He added that the security system used by Family Safe Holidays is the same as that used by online banks, assuring the confidentiality of any information stored.
Last July, Halifax advised holidaymakers to make use of a safe if one is available in their hotel to ensure the safety of their passport and other valuables.
