07 August 2007 Acapulco 'the perfect spot' for beach football
Football fans already wetting their lips about the prospect of the new football season in the UK may want to warm up for kick-off with a last-minute trip to Acupalco for the qualifying matches of this year's Fifa Beach World Soccer Cup.
With the tournament proper to take place in Rio this November, the preliminaries are being played on the white-sanded south-western Pacific coast of Mexico this month, with the Caribbean and North, Central and South American teams playing for their place in Brazil.
Guillermo Cantu, general director of Mexico's national teams, said: "Acapulco is simply the perfect spot for beach soccer to make its name in such a football-loving country as Mexico."
Visitors will be able to mix a classic beach holiday in Acapulco with the sight of the American and Caribbean sides battling it out from August 9th to 11th 2007.
The first Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup was held in 2005, with France picking up the trophy, before beach soccer came home a year later when Brazil beat Uruguay 4-1 in the final on Copacabana Beach.
