26 July 2006 Active holidaymakers 'taking risks'
Around 2.24 million people will take part in adventure activities during their summer holidays this year, a survey has revealed.
The report from insurance firm AXA has shown that holidaymakers planning cycling trips are least likely to take out cover, with one in five choosing not to take out any cover before pushing off.
Some 18 per cent of those planning to go walking or trekking during their annual holiday are also likely to without any kind of travel protection, leaving themselves exposed to a whole range of loss and medical expenses.
Travel insurance manager at AXA Insurance, Pat Brady, commented: "Travel insurance is a necessity for anyone holidaying abroad, especially if you plan to take part in any adventure activities.
"If you are injured during these and need medical treatment, your bill could run into thousands of pounds."
Research also shows an estimated 600,000 holiday makers are planning to take part in water sports without any insurance cover, while over ten per cent of those looking to do horse riding while away will not be covered in case of accidents.
