07 June 2006 Active travellers advised to take cover
As many as 200,000 UK tourists are predicted to suffer an accident or injury on holiday this year as a result of various sporting and physical activities.
Results from a new study by AXA show that 44 per cent of those between the ages of 18 and 24 are planning to take an activity holiday this year, one in five will sustain some kind of injury.
Nearly one in three adults in the UK is planning to take an activity holiday in the next 12 months with trekking and walking holidays being the most popular choice of break, followed by cycling, water sports and scuba diving holidays.
Travel manager at AXA Insurance, Pat Brady, commented: "Many people are venturing away from the traditional package holiday by combining their vacation with new activities and sports.
"I fear that people are leaving themselves vulnerable. Many people believe that nothing will happen to them and while this is the true in the majority of cases, for the sake of a few pounds to take out travel insurance, doesn’t it make sense to have peace of mind."
The Foreign Commonwealth Office advises those planning a more adventurous trip to ensure they have comprehensive travel cover that covers them for dangerous sports and activities, medical and repatriation costs and any equipment they are taking.
