27 December 2007 Adventure holidaymakers 'should book now'
Families should consider booking adventure holidays, which can provide them with great value for money and "something a bit out of the ordinary".
Those planning to book an adventure holiday for 2008, particularly families expecting to travel in the school holidays should book "as early as possible" to secure their places.
Matt Hodgson, manager of travel company Travel Nation, explained: "It's an increasing market. More and more of the larger adventure companies are featuring family trips in their brochures. It's still a small percentage, but there is definitely an increasing market there."
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) reports that the number of UK travellers visiting Europe and North America fell by one per cent between summer 2006 and summer 2007, while travel to other long haul destinations soared by nine per cent over the same period.
Families in Britain spent an average of £12.50 per week (£650 per year) on family package holidays abroad in 2005-06, compared with £1 per week (£52 per year) on package holidays in the UK, according to data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
