11 February 2008 Advice given for passengers who miss connections
Travellers who miss connecting flights are being advised by the Air Transport Users Council (AUC) on what problems they could incur.
Although many carriers encourage their passengers to make use of connecting flights - as they can often provide lower fares - it is claimed that not all commit to the welfare of their customers should a journey be missed.
AUC chairman Tina Tietjen said accommodation or food purchased as a result of a missed connection has led consumers to complain to the organisation as they have not been compensated.
The report, entitled Missed Connections, also suggests that stress can be caused by the anxiety of missing a flight.
We think that airlines should commit to looking after their customers throughout their journey," Ms Tietjen added.
"But if they do not, they should at least make it clear what their passengers should expect should they cause them to miss a connection."
Other issues recently tackled by the AUC include the refund of taxes, fees and charges on flights, and a report on mishandled baggage.
