17 December 2005 Africa emerging as major tourism player
Africa is increasingly becoming a major tourism destination, according to Nigeria's Daily Independent.
Recent policies and developments are thought to have helped Africa's tourism growth; in 2004 the continent experienced a rise of 8.2 per cent in tourist arrivals and is the only continent not to have experienced any year-on-year fall in visitor numbers since 1999.
Further indicators for positive growth come from the first quarter statistics for 2005, which found a 12.4 per cent increase in tourist arrivals from the same period in 2004.
"The travel industry…has taken many positive steps and has much to be proud of," the report states.
"As a result, increased respect is shown for the natural environment and the human social and economic communities."
Such respect is embodied in the number of travel companies which are becoming involved with projects that benefit the local community.
For those with a desire to seek out less usual places, Africa's scores of countries can provide an ideal experience.
A report conducted by the International Travel Market found that an increasing number of wealthy travellers were choosing destinations like Africa for 'experience' rather than 'relaxation' holidays.
