19 September 2007 Airline calls for additional low-fare Malta routes
Budget airline Ryanair has issued a call for the government of Malta to add more low-fare routes to the country's itinerary.
Ryanair claims that in doing so, the Mediterranean island nation will "unlock its full potential".
The news follows an announcement by Ryanair that it will now host a new route between Malta and Venice Treviso. The latest route will be the low fares airline's eighth new route in the region since it added Malta to its circuit last October.
"We hope the Maltese government will now take the initiative and unlock the island's true tourism potential by supporting the rapid development of low-fare routes for the benefit of the island, people and economy of Malta," commented Ryanair's deputy chief executive officer Michael Cawley.
He added that thanks to Ryanair low fares, Malta has seen "unprecedented growth" - which Ryanair claims is the tip of the iceberg in terms of the island's potential.
Malta is a European Union member state and is the organisation's smallest member in terms of size.
