14 September 2007 Airline slams 'London-centric' Tory proposals on aviation tax
Regional airline Flybe has urged the Conservative Party to reject the policy proposals outlined by its Quality of Life policy group regarding regional transport.
The company claims that - while it agrees with claims that regions are best served by the railways for domestic travel - a tax on domestic flights will nevertheless be a "slap in the face" for UK regions.
Jim French, chief executive at the firm, said: "Policy designed to solve London-centric angst cannot simply be applied to the rest of the country without seriously damaging regional economies that have come to rely on aviation".
He added that politicians should keep in mind that domestic air travel accounts for 0.4 per cent of total carbon dioxide emissions from the UK, a nation itself responsible for two per cent of all global emissions.
The Association of British Travel Agents has also criticised the Conservative Party report, claiming that the representations from the travel industry in this matter have been ignored.
