26 July 2007 Airlines 'not obliged to offer compensation for delays'
While holidaymakers may expect an airline to pay out for a delayed or cancelled flight, in fact, this may not always be the case.
Halifax reports that an airline ticket only ensures the right to fly to a destination - with no guarantee of the time of arrival.
The firm advises holidaymakers to make sure they are protected by an adequate travel insurance policy in case they need to claim financial compensation for delays on their journey.
Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting for Halifax Travel Insurance said: "When travelling by air you need to plan for every eventuality, including delays.
"To cover all eventualities, we urge that people do not travel without insurance cover."
She added that new security measures are now standard at airports, but can still result in delays which can spoil the start of a holiday.
In January 2007, Holiday Which? reported that the European Court of Justice ruled that airlines have a legal obligation to provide care and compensation for delayed passengers, paving the way for future legislation to boost the rights of holidaymakers.
