13 July 2007 Airport fingerprint scans 'offer more security'
A leading British airline has explained the intention behind new plans for fingerprint and face scans to be implemented at Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport.
British Airways reports that the introduction of these security measures will prevent passengers swapping tickets or getting on flights they are not supposed to be boarding, while noting that such measures are being set by the UK government and the British Airports Authority, rather than the airline itself.
A spokersperson for British Airways, said: "As you pass through that security system, biometric information is taken which, when you board the aircraft, is checked with the individual that's boarding."
He added that this system will offer enhanced security, describing the scheme as an extension of existing security measures, including photographs taken at Gatwick.
In April 2007, Bristol International Airport urged passengers to make themselves aware of the restrictions on carrying liquid on board aircraft as hand baggage, reporting that three bin liners full of prohibited items are removed from travellers every hour at peak times, resulting in inconvenience and delays for all.
