20 July 2005 Alitalia cabin crew strike causes disruptions
The Italian airline, Alitalia, has been forced to cancel as many as 80 flights due to industrial action.
A 24-hour strike was carried out by a cabin crew members' union on Monday, with important airports in Rome and Milan expected to be the worst hit.
Alitalia had anticipated that no more than 23 national flights and 33 international flights would be affected by the strike, but the disruption proved to be more troublesome.
The strike was called in protest of working conditions that had worsened due to short staffing, and the exploitation of short-term contract workers.
Italy is a popular summer destination for British tourists, and the strikes will have disrupted plans for many holidaygoers.
This incident emphasises the need for those thinking of going away this summer to make sure they are covered in case of similar cases.
