15 June 2006 Americans choosing to buy travel insurance
Three times more holidaymakers are set to purchase travel insurance this year than five years ago, according a recent survey.
The report by the US Travel Insurance Association found that trip-cancellation is one of the key factors for travellers taking out holiday insurance cover.
This increase in cover also has links to anxiety among travellers about natural disasters and terrorist attacks, the report reveals.
Mollie Fitzgerald, the co-owner of Frontiers International Travel agency in Pennsylvania, USA, commented: "We absolutely recommend it, and in fact, we automatically calculate the premium and offer it as an option on every deposit."
Travellers are advised that it is worth considering taking out a travel insurance policy to cover non-refundable, prepaid travel tickets or international excursions.
Lost luggage and overseas emergency medical evacuation costs are also important factors to take into consideration, as they may not be covered by other insurance plans.
A survey from online insurer Swift also recently revealed that 44 per cent of Brits admit to travelling abroad without travel insurance cover.
