19 November 2005 Anger over Thai zoo's exotic menu
There has been a furious reaction to the news that a Thai zoo is to serve an exotic menu including elephant, lion and giraffe.
Costing roughly £60, the taster menu will allow customers to experience what the animals they are visiting taste like at the Chiang Mai Night Safari.
"The VIP guest who pays 4,500 baht ($110) for the buffet will have the privilege of tasting an exotic menu, ranging from dog meat from Thailand's Sakhon Nakhon province to lion meat from Africa," Plodprasop Suraswadi, the zoo's project director, said.
But critics have argued that it will encourage wildlife trafficking in a country already notorious for the practice, reports the Times of India.
"Serving rare animals on the table confirms that Thailand is ignoring policies for wildlife preservation," said Wildlife Fund Thailand secretary Suraphol Duangkae.
Construction of the park is reported to have taken one and a half years to build and cost £9 million. It holds 726 species of animal and more are to be shipped in from Australia and Kenya.
