01 February 2006 Australia named as top destination for UK travellers
Australia is proving to be the most popular long haul destination for UK travellers, according to a survey conducted by tailor-made holiday specialist Travelbag.
A total of five of the top ten destinations were Australian, including Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns. The cities were placed first, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth respectively.
"Australia is just huge for the UK at the moment," commented Matthew Foster, marketing director for Travelbag.
"Whereas it used to be considered a 'once in a lifetime' trip, a two-week annual holiday to Australia is now no more unusual than any other destination. As more hotel properties open next year and flights remain competitive, we expect Australia to continue its growth," he added.
The travel company predicted that destinations such as Thailand will see increasing competition from other South East Asian destinations such as Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, reports Europe Travel News.
Africa is also set to be popular with long haul travellers, with Travelbag experiencing a 35 per cent increase in visits to Kenya as well as a growing number opting for countries such as Mozambique.
