13 November 2007 Australia 'wins top tourism title'
Australia was yesterday named as the world's top tourism country 'brand' for the second year in a row.
Contributing to the nation's success was the range of holiday experiences that can be undertaken there, the report stated.
The Country Brand Index also ranked the region as number one for outdoor activities and having the friendliest locals.
Desley Boyle, tourism minister for the state of Queensland, said that in her experience the attitude of Australians was what endeared people around the world to them.
"We're out there, we laugh out loud, we've got some pretty peculiar expressions here and there. It's our friendliness, a kind of honesty," she explained.
The USA was the runner up, while Great Britain took third place.
France and Italy rounded out the top five.
It was reported in recent days that a Queensland facility founded by the late Steve Irwin - Australia Zoo - was awarded the title of top tourist attraction in the state.
