10 November 2005 Australian government foils terror plot
The increasing vulnerability of travellers all around the world after September 11th has been highlighted again as police in Australia arrested 17 people yesterday on suspicion of trying to blow up Sydney Opera House.
Although most attacks that Australians have had cause to worry about have been on the Antipodeans' favourite island of Bali, the recent arrests have emphasised the need for both residents and travellers in Australia itself to be aware of the increasing terrorist threat.
Australian authorities believe that they have averted what could have been a "catastrophic" attack on the city.
Ken Moroney, New South Wales Police commissioner, said: "We've disrupted a large-scale operation.
"Had it been allowed to go through to fruition, we certainly believe would have been catastrophic."
The arrests follow the Australian government's announcement earlier this week that the onus for travel is to be placed on the tourist, creating a growing need for people to have an increased awareness of issues.
