08 December 2005 Australians to receive disaster payouts
Australians have benefited this week from the news that they will receive $1,000 in the event of a disaster at home or abroad.
New laws will be introduced to ensure that the Disaster Recovery Payment will help both adults and children, although senators have advised that people should still take the need for travel cover very seriously.
Family and community services minister Kay Patterson said: "The Howard government's assistance following a disaster is meant to complement, not replace, personal travel and other insurance and I encourage people to make sure they have adequate insurance, particularly before they travel."
Events such as the Indian Ocean tsunami and the Bali and London bombings contributed to the impetus behind the decision to introduce disaster assistance, as well as to add to the need to streamline disaster responses from various government agencies.
Last month Australian police arrested 17 people on suspicion of trying to blow up the Sydney Opera House.
With a number of destinations in the world becoming a more precarious place to visit, residents of all countries, not just Australians, should heed the advice to purchase travel protection.
