10 February 2006 Avalanche kills two in US
An avalanche has claimed the lives of two snowmobilers in the US state of Montana.
Rolling down a mountain and across a lake, the avalanche pushed a wave of water, snow, ice and broken trees onto the people at the side of the lake.
According to the Forest Service's Glacier Country Avalanche Centre, the avalanche was strong enough to crush the snow and ice surface of the Red Acre Lake.
A party of snowmobilers close to the scene managed to save the life of one man who had become trapped in six feet of snow.
Stan Bones from the Avalanche Centre told the Associated Press that the slide was probably the result of heavy snow and unusually warm weather for the time of year.
The avalanche occurred just one mile from the Glen Alps car park, highlighting the need for travellers to take adequate insurance cover for unexpected events both on and off the slopes.
