Travellers looking for an ecological getaway should look to the Central American country of Belize.
Recognised as a developing nation for eco-tourism, one of the country's eco-lodges, Hidden Valley Inn, in the Maya Mountains, has been presented with a Sustainable Tourism Award for its environmental excellence, making it a top choice for travellers coming from overseas.
The Hidden Valley Inn is on a 7,200 acre private reserve in Western Belize and provides a selection of sustainable tourism programmes, and makes use of recycled material and the provision of water from fresh springs.
The lodge also facilitates natural research and ecological projects, according to Caribbean Net News.
Tourists can experience two different ecosystems in the Maya Mountains and have the opportunity to view native wildlife, including pumas and jaguars.
The presentation was made by 2006 Islands Magazine/Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) awards at the eighth Annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development in Belize.
Belize is located on the Caribbean coast and has a long mixed history dating back 4,000 years with later colonial influence coming from both the Spanish and the English, the first settlers are thought to have been the Maya and Carib Indians.
