09 February 2007 BA:
British Airways (BA) has claimed that it has "no intention of discriminating against passengers" in its new luggage policy.
Critics had accused the airline of targeting passengers who could not manage a single 23kg item of luggage in its pricing policy, which aims to charge up to £120 for each additional bag on long-haul flights.
However, a statement from BA suggested that some discretion will be used in the case of elderly and infirm travellers.
"BA has absolutely no intention of discriminating against passengers who cannot comfortably carry a 23kg bag," the company said.
"Where it is clear that a passenger cannot manage one bag, we will let them check in an additional bag."
In cases where this is permitted, BA added that the total weight of luggage should still be within the 23kg overall limit.
The company advised that a transition period will remain in effect until September 30th 2007, during which time single bags of up to the previous limit of 32kg will continue to be accepted free of charge.
