07 June 2007 BA reports passenger safety measures
While recent court cases have not recognised a direct link between deep vein thrombosis and air travel, a leading airline has commented on the measures it takes to ensure passenger safety onboard its craft.
British Airways (BA) reports that its Well Being in the Air programme is strongly promoted on its planes, with passengers given hints and tips on what exercises to take and what food and drink to opt for to aid their health when flying.
"We do a huge range of things to encourage our customers to take necessary measures," said a spokesperson for the firm.
"We have various things on our website...in pre-flight sections about the things people can do and whether they're at risk at not."
He added that the airline also offers extra water to prevent passengers becoming dehydrated on long-haul flights.
In 2004, a survey from American Express revealed that 39 per cent of women wear recommended socks to help prevent deep vein thrombosis when on long-haul flights, compared to 32 per cent of men.
