25 October 2006 BGTW release awards shortlist
Environmentally friendly train journeys through the Rockies in Canada and a 253-mile trip through the musical history of Virginia are two of the tourism projects nominated by the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW).
Winners of the awards will be announced on November 5th at the Savoy Hotel in London, with honours for the best tourism projects in the UK and abroad, as well as the Globe Award for the best major tourism development worldwide.
Mary Anne Evans, chairman of the BGTW, said: "Each year our members nominate an incredibly wide-ranging and fascinating list of projects for the BGTW Tourism Awards and this year is no exception.
"Our problem is choosing the winner from such a strong list of worthwhile candidates."
Also nominated is the Shinta Mani scheme in Cambodia that aims to create employment for the poorest Cambodians in the local hotel industry.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises British travellers to Cambodia to take appropriate preventative measures against malaria, avoid live animal markets due to recent incidents of avian flu.
