19 December 2006 BIBA urges cover for Christmas holidays
As people head abroad this Christmas, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has advised those going overseas to make sure they are adequately covered on their travels.
BIBA quotes a number of Foreign Officer estimates for medical care incurred due to illness or accidents abroad, which can cost from £600 for two days in a general ward in the Mediterranean to £30,000 for a heart attack in the USA.
The association reports that many holidaymakers head abroad without travel insurance, or with cover that does not protect them sufficiently
Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager, said: "Things can go wrong over the Christmas period and when they do, being properly insured means that you can get on with the enjoying the festive season despite unwelcome events."
He added that getting in touch with an insurance broker can make the difference between a happy or miserable holiday season.
Last month, Halifax reported that 2.5 million Britons are planning on heading overseas over Christmas.
