13 March 2008 Bag security 'depends on destination'
Whether or not holidaymakers should padlock and secure their luggage depends on the destination they are travelling to, it has been claimed.
According to a spokesperson for Trailfinders, backpackers should bear in mind advice for the individual locations they are travelling to rather than overall advice when choosing whether or not to lock their bags.
Trailfinders is a UK independent travel agent which offers tailor-made travel itineraries for British holidaymakers.
"We generally say that you should always comply with the local authority advice within the country or destination that you're visiting," the spokesperson commented.
He added that in the US it is better to not lock luggage as officials have the right to check luggage rigorously and can even break locks in order to search baggage.
Meanwhile, in Johannesburg, local authority advice recommends locking luggage.
