28 January 2006 Baggage problems lead to flight delays
Problems with a new high-tech baggage system at New Zealand's Auckland International Airport have led to flight delays and lost baggage.
All baggage is required to be screened under Civil Aviation Authority regulations, leading to the installation of the new system.
However, numerous passengers have complained as the length of time it takes to check each item has led to some suitcases being left behind.
A number of airlines are reported to be seeking compensation for the harm caused by the disruption.
For those without travel insurance the problems could prove to be more than an inconvenience as some bags have been lost completely, potentially losing passengers hundreds of pounds worth of property.
Stewart Milne, executive director for the Board of Airline Representatives, said that 250 bags were left behind at Auckland on one flight alone last weekend.
Auckland Airport has admitted that there have been problems with the new system but added that it is confident the situation will improve.
