14 July 2005 Balkans baulking from further flooding
For the second time in just over a week the Balkans have been hit by heavy rains and suffered severe flooding.
After the floods of last weekend, a further 12 hours of rain fell on central Bulgaria over the course of Tuesday, novinite.com reports.
The heaviest rain in 50 years has prompted flood warnings in Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo and Svistov.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Danube, Romanian capital Bucharest and Pitesti suffered from flooded streets, causing the evacuation to higher regions for the second time in a week.
The wet weather follows on closely from the numerous problems caused by rainwater earlier this month.
There were nine fatalities in northern Bulgaria and southern Romania, with extensive damage inflicted upon thousands of homes and many bridges.
