16 September 2005 Bangkok hit by floods
Heavy flooding in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand has caused the deaths of a girl and a man.
Severe rain fell for long periods, with as much as 5 inches falling in an hour, submerging roads and causing chaos to traffic.
The man was killed as he attempted to open the gate to a dyke, in order to save the village of Pho Kaeo. He was swept into the canal and drowned.
According to the Bangkok Post, the governor Apirak Kosayodhin was confident that the city's drainage system would be able to deal with the excessive rainwaters, but that concerns remained over the impact it would have on the Chao Phraya river levels.
Sandbags have been used along the river banks to help protect the area.
Flooding was also reported in Nakhon Nayok, causing trains to be delayed as the tracks were covered in water.
More heavy rains are expected over the coming days.
