24 August 2007 Barcelona tipped for 'artistic travellers'
Holidaymakers interested in stepping away from the beach and exploring countless cultural and artistic sights when abroad have been advised to head to Barcelona, dubbed by some as "one big open-air museum".
Independent travel agent Holidays-Direct reports that there is a wealth of culture on display in the Catalan capital, from the Picasso Museum to the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
Sports fans are also equally well catered for, as the city hosts the Olympic Stadium and home of footballing giants Barcelona.
Neil Smillie, head of the firm, said: "Barcelona is also home to a mixture of bars and restaurants, from the stylish cafe bar to the flamboyant nightclubs.
"The many excellent restaurants serve meals late in the evening and Barcelona lights up at night, offering visitors a range of flamboyant entertainment."
He added that the city also offers a range of shopping opportunities for travellers, with a mix of markets, boutiques and contemporary shops.
In January 2007, Yorkshire Bank warned that a third of Britons planning a European city break will fail to take out travel insurance to cover their trip.
