30 November 2007 Benidorm 'best choice for ethical hols'
Holidaymakers concerned about their carbon footprint would do well to join the masses and head to Benidorm on their holidays, it has been suggested.
According to Leo Hickman, author of The Final Call: In Search of the True Cost of Our Holidays, the resort is a "good" example of tourism management, the Telegraph reports.
Mr Hickman added that the resort was a "model" for responsible travel, noting that tourists staying in Benidorm tend to stay in a small area and in high rise buildings therefore having less of an impact on the earth.
"By staying in tourist hotspots like Benidorm or Cancun, holidaymakers are lessening their environmental impact through improved economies of scale," he commented.
The author went on to say that holidaymakers spending two weeks each year in Spain were less harmful to the environment than those going on long-haul trips to Borneo.
Friends of the Earth recently advocated the train as an alternative to air travel for holidaymakers, while the Association of British Travel Agents concurred that rail is an acceptable environmental alternative to aviation.
