20 June 2006  Bermuda introduces hurricane guarantee
The island of Bermuda is promising visitors and holidaymakers coming to the island a "catalogue of freebies" if a hurricane hits whilst they are on the island.

The Hurricane Guarantee programme which has been set up by the Bermuda Hotel Association (BHA) will be in operation at 16 hotels across the island until the end of September, when the storm season ends, the Bermuda Royal Gazette reports.

Ewart Brown, Tourism and Transport Minister, commented: "This is a very important step moving forward as we understand that even the threat of a hurricane interrupting the vacation that folks have worked so hard to earn can lead to a great deal of anxiety.

"We think this comprehensive programme will offer some peace of mind and let them concentrate on enjoying all that we have to offer."

If a hurricane-force storm is predicted to be approaching Bermuda within five days, guests will be able to cancel reservations without penalty.

Deposits will be refunded or applied to another booking in the future, if guests are unable to recover expenses on their travel insurance policy.

If the island is hit by a storm participating hotels will not charge guests for food and accommodation for the duration of the hurricane.

The American National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration predicts that this hurricane season could bring 13 to 16 named storms, with eight to ten becoming hurricanes, of which four to six could become 'major' hurricanes.
