16 February 2007 'Biggest year yet' for sporting-event holidays
A sporting event is becoming as popular as the food or beach quality of a location in attracting holidaymakers, it has emerged.
Although a traditional beach holiday is still the most common type of getaway for Britons, research from directline-holidays.co.uk found that trips to a resort which is hosting a sporting event are increasing in numbers, with 2007 set to be "the biggest year yet".
The company stated that although it traditionally sees much demand for skiing and mountain biking holidays, sporting-event holidays have now increased in popularity.
"In recent years our call centre handles an increasing number of requests where the sport available is at least as important as the dining options or the quality of the beach," remarked Matthew Flint, director of the directline-holidays.co.uk.
Locations such as France, Spain, the US, the Caribbean and Italy may all benefit from this trend, he added.
