10 March 2008 Bilbao: Spain's emerging destination
Those looking for a traditional destination to visit in Spain often choose Madrid or Barcelona, but it now appears that there is an emerging destination hot on their heels.
Lonely Planet claims that Bilbao has now arrived as an "international hotspot", providing something a little more cultural than the beach resorts and more "off the beaten track" than other cities.
As the largest city in the Basque region, Bilbao offers a quiet way of life by day but comes alive when night falls, said Korina Miller, commissioning editor at the travel guide.
"Bilbao has reinvented itself as a vibrant metropolis, something which is increasingly recognised by international visitors," she explained.
In terms of climate, Bilbao is warm by summer but can be "chilly" in winter and receives regular rainfall.
One of the greatest attractions in this emerging destination is the Guggenheim Museum, which cityguide.com reports was designed by Frank Gehry and houses an impressive collection of modern artworks.
