25 October 2007 Boom predicted for international travel
A boom has been predicted for international air travel, by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
According to a passenger and freight forecast made by the IATA, passenger numbers are likely to reach 2.75 billion by 2011.
This figure is an increase of 620 million on the passengers travelling in 2006, the IATA notes.
"The numbers clearly show that the world wants to fly. And it also needs to fly. Air transport is critical to the fabric of the global economy, playing a critical role in wealth generation and poverty reduction," commented Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's director general and chief executive officer.
Meanwhile, IATA also reported that domestic passenger demand is predicted to grow from 1.37 billion passengers in 2006 to 1.77 billion in 2011.
The IATA represents a total of 240 airlines which make up 94 per cent of international scheduled air traffic.
