25 September 2007 Boost for British Columbia tourism
Aboriginal tourism in British Columbia, Canada, has received a boost from government funding, it has been revealed.
The Vancouver Sun reports that the cultural tourism sector received a $5 million "shot-in-the-arm" from the provincial government in a bid to take the tourism subdivision "to the next level".
Funding will go to the Aboriginal Tourism Association of British Columbia (ATBC), where it will be used to implement a strategy that was devised almost two years ago.
"Ensuring a robust aboriginal cultural tourism sector is an essential part of growing the tourism industry in British Columbia. It will give us a major competitive advantage in the international marketplace," the publication quoted tourism minister Stan Hagen as saying.
ATBC is a non-profit organisation committed to promoting a sustainable, culturally rich Aboriginal tourism industry in the British Columbia region, which spans Cariboo Chilcotin Coast, the Kootenay Rockies, Northern British Columbia, Thompson Okanagan, Vancouver Coast, Vancouver Mountain and Vancouver Island.
