08 February 2007 British Airways to revise luggage charging policy
British Airways has announced that it is to revise the policy of the company with regards to charges on excess baggage.
The company has elected to simplify the current system and to charged fixed rates per extra bag in excess of the 23 kg free luggage allowance, dependent on destination.
An extra bag on a domestic flight will now cost £30, rising to £60 for flights to Europe and £120 for long-haul trips.
"Our free luggage allowances, for both carry-on and checked-in luggage, remain among the most generous in the aviation industry," the company reports.
"Many other airlines offer smaller free allowances and charge for additional items such as skis, golf bags or other sports equipment," it added.
British Airways comments that over 98 per cent of its customers travel within their free 23 kg allowance.
In 2004, Churchill suggested that Britons need additional guidance in their packing and trip planning, noting that many holidaymakers take too much luggage when travelling abroad.
