19 August 2005 British abroad not all bad
For many Brits, going abroad is an annual luxury, and one that most people are determined to make the most of.
But the average Brit often gets a bad reputation for binge drinking and getting sunburnt whilst away.
A new survey by Halifax Travel, however, subverts this stereotype, and shows that not all Brits deserve the negative images sometimes conveyed by the press.
British people are more likely than any other nationality to converse with locals in their own language, finds the survey.
In addition, they came second only to France at being the nation most tempted to try local food and were third most likely to take an interest in local culture.
"When you look at the overall results Brits do actually come across as adventurous, determined to join in and get under the skin of the country they are visiting," said Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager at Halifax Travel.
