23 October 2007 Britons 'fritter away holiday spends'
UK holidaymakers are wasting £1 billion annually on unnecessary purchases in foreign airport departure lounges, it has been reported.
According to research by Abbey, 36 per cent of the population has confessed to wasting roughly £65 per person on the return journey.
Furthermore, the study showed that men frittered away more than their female counterparts - spending an average of £68 on unwanted items compared to £58 spent by women.
"With little else to do in the departure lounge, shopping helps kill the dead time between checking-in and boarding a flight. But it's amazing how much people are prepared to waste," commented Steve Shore, head of banking at Abbey.
He added that the 25-34 year old age group is most likely to spend foreign currency on unnecessary purchases such as magazines and "tacky" souvenirs.
Abbey recently reported that Britons spend £350 million per year on replacing forgotten holiday items at the airport.
