04 October 2007 Britons 'head overseas'
Mortgage holders in the UK are increasingly looking to a move abroad as a possible way out of their financial quagmire, it has been revealed.
According to currency firm HiFX, 37 per cent of mortgage payers are considering travelling overseas in a bid to escape the current economic climate in the UK.
Meanwhile, 40 per cent would consider a move overseas if they could rid themselves of their mortgage repayments.
"While moving overseas has long been a tradition for those seeking sunnier climes, a different career path or a peaceful retirement, it would now seem that more and more people are no longer considering emigration as a luxury but as a necessity," commented Mark Bodega, director at HiFX.
According to the study, those aged between 25 and 34 were the most likely to consider a move abroad.
The top destinations for Brits abroad are Australia, Canada, Cyprus, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and the USA.
HiFX has operations in Europe, North America and Australasia and was founded in 1998.
