31 May 2007 Britons 'travelling uninsured'
A number of Britons are taking the risk of heading abroad without travel insurance every year, it has been reported.
Newly-published research from Norwich Union reveals that a quarter of Britons will travel without insurance, with half citing the shortness of their break as a reason.
And 14 per cent of holidaymakers admitted that they simply forgot to purchase annual or single-trip travel insurance before going overseas.
The firm notes that medical emergencies, cancellation and loss or damage to property are the leading causes of travel insurance claims.
Luis Berraondo, travel underwriter at the firm, said: " Holidaymakers put a lot of time and effort into their holiday from which hotel or villa to stay in to which airline and what baggage to take with them, but our research shows that often they don't think about the consequences both financially and emotionally if things go wrong."
He added that travellers could be liable for expensive medical bills without cover, while urging consumers to purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after booking to ensure financial protection against cancellation of their trip.
Last September, Direct Line reported that ten per cent of victims of theft abroad had not purchased holiday insurance before travelling.
