17 August 2007  Brits advised to avoid 'disappointing' mainstream sites
Britons wanting to make the most of their summer holidays have been advised to avoid the most famous landmarks which can often be expensive and disappointing and instead cast their eyes further afield for more esoteric pleasures.

Recently published research from Virgin Travel Insurance reveals that the Eiffel Tower is the site most Britons feel let down by when on holiday, with travellers blaming overcrowding and high prices.

Other disappointing sites included the Louvre - specifically Da Vinci's Mona Lisa - together with New York's Times Square and Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

Jason Wyer-Smith, a spokesperson for the firm, said: "It seems thousands of Brits are returning from their hard-earned holidays feeling a bit let down when famous tourist spots don't live up to expectation."

He added that seeking out "hidden gems" could well be the secret to having a perfect holiday.

Travellers have been advised to opt for more original sites, including the Treasury at Petra in Jordan, the Grand Canal in Venice and the Masai Mara in Kenya.

Last August, NatWest advised holidaymakers to travel to areas where they can take advantage of a beneficial exchange rate, with cheaper air fares making it possible to head to more exotic destinations.
