03 December 2007 Brits 'are making the most of the weekends'
Short city breaks across Europe are becoming more popular with the British traveller, it has been reported.
The Association of British Travel Agents states that Britons looking to get away from the rat race for a long weekend are making the most of increasingly accessible cities on the continent.
Progressively more popular low-cost airlines are fuelling the popularity of European capitals and other major cities, since they allow travellers to reach their destinations economically and efficiently.
Sean Tipton, spokesperson for ABTA, said: "When the flights are so much cheaper, people will go away for a couple of days on the spur of the moment because it is very affordable. Get on a flight and two hours later you are in the south of France."
He added that in the past, with flights to the continent costing £300 or £400, only the affluent were able to make such trips, with most travellers opting for longer breaks to justify the expense.
In January this year, the Official Airline Guide stated that there were two million more seats available on low-cost airlines than there had been at the same time in 2006.
