10 June 2006 Brits choosing to travel abroad
The number of British holidaymakers going abroad for their holidays is on the increase according to new government figures.
Figures from the Office of National Statistics reveals that in the last 12 month 15 per cent more Brits took a long-haul trip than in the previous year, with 12.1 million people having snapped up tickets to head to Africa, Asia-Pacific, South America and Eastern and Southern Europe.
Travellers heading into Western Europe also increased in number, with 50.3 million holidaymakers choosing trips closer to home.
In the same period a total of 30.7 million overseas travellers chose to visit England for their holidays.
Although ONS figures show that the number of people travelling to North America fell by six per cent in the last 12 month, a recent survey by travel guide company, Lonely Planet revealed that the USA was the number two favourite next destination for travellers around the world.
