14 December 2007 Brits do Christmas shopping in New York
Millions of Britons are set to travel to New York to do their Christmas shopping this winter, it has been reported.
According to Abbey, research from Cater Allen private bank suggests that 2.2 million Brits will head abroad to engage in Christmas shopping.
While 230,000 plan to utilise the high-speed rail link between Kings Cross St Pancras and Paris to shop, 882,000 people will head for the Big Apple in order to make the most of the strong pound against the weaker dollar.
"Clearly the strong pound is having a real impact on shoppers and many are heading abroad to find a bargain this Christmas and take advantage of the favourable exchange rate with the US dollar in particular," commented Sally Ann Watts, head of marketing at Cater Allen.
The stereotype of the female Christmas shopper is also turned on its head by the report, as it was revealed that men are twice as likely as women to leave the UK and do their Christmas shopping abroad.
Earlier this year BAA Heathrow Airport predicted that New York would be a "top destination" for travel this December.
