09 February 2006 Brits flash their cash while on holiday
Extravagant Brits are overspending by £300 while on holiday, according to new research.
Commissioned by Western Union, the survey found that the average holidaymaker sets aside £500 for their holiday, but ends up spending £800 while on the trip.
Regional variation emerged from the findings, as people from the East Midlands and East Anglia were found to be the most spendthrift, while the most frugal holidaymakers were from Wales.
In total the country overspends by £8.7 billion, TravelMole reports.
A combination of wining and dining while abroad is the biggest contributor to the overspend, although travellers from the West Midlands and Scotland were found to spend more than they anticipated on buying extravagant presents to take back home with them.
For those without any cover may receive unexpected bills due to travel delays or illness could end up adding a significant amount to the total spent on the holiday.
